Does Fish Oil Have Side Effects?

by admin

The US National Institute of Health classifies a low intake of omega-3 fatty acids from fish as GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe). The U.S. FDA classifies intake of up to 3 grams of Omega-3 fatty acids as GRAS. And because fish oil supplements are generally regarded as safe, they are not subject to FDA premarket and approval so make sure you chose a reputable brand.

Some of the side effects of fish oil can manifest due to an inferior quality brand. Poor quality brands may not have filtered for heavy metals such as mercury. Nevertheless here are some common side effects of too much fish oil in adults:

Upset stomach
Diarrhea
Increase gas
Heartburn
Abdominal Pain
Bloating
Acid Reflux

Too much fish oil can also raise the blood glucose level in people with type 2 diabetes.

As mentioned, oOne of the biggest concerns regarding fish oil side effects is the possibility of toxins in the supplements. While there are several companies that focus on the production and manufacturing of fish oil, they don’t always make the products with the purist of ingredients.

The fish they provide to make the fish oil supplements are often times contaminated to some extent. These contaminated fish are then processed, despite their high levels of mercury, and other toxic materials such as Dioxins & Polychoisinated Biphenyles [PCBs].

Children:

Fish oil side effects can have a strong impact on children since they weigh less and have smaller bodies. There are several neurologists that were concerned with the side effects of giving them the same dose because of the higher risk of fish oil side effects. Also, there is concern to the exposure to dioxins & polychoinated Biphenles or [PCB's] they are exposed to.

Though there are many benefits to using fish oil for our children, all medications or supplements hold a bit of risk. The natural use of fish oil does not come with side effects. However, many would rather deal with the fish oil side effects than the many risks of drugs like Ritalin or Concertta. Knowing that manufactured medications like these can cause heart attacks, strokes, and produce a number of other symptoms such as violent outbursts, mood swings, and suicidal thoughts, isn’t it safer to deal with fish oil side effects as a treatment for your children?
